PROJECT OUTCOME
This project came about after Tallulah, one of our College of Creative Arts students and Association Exec recognised an opportunity for creative students to have a community platform to share and sell their work. Many student already independently make and sell online or at shops/markets, but imagine if there was a place where Massey CoCA students could come together and create a supportive, communal market place?
Proposition:
Market day of student-led stalls for CoCA students to sell their work or products. I imagine the types of products sold will be prints, cards, CDs, postcards, zines, photographs, jewellery, tote bags or clothes. The price range of the things sold would need to stay as low as possible to be affordable for the primarily student market. If held on campus and marketed well, we should get non-Massey people coming too. Celebration of student creativity.

Opportunities:
- Give students a chance to put either their uni work or passion projects into a tangible product for sale. Encourages entrepreneurship and gives them the opportunity to experience the stages of developing, marketing and selling a product.
- Give CoCA students a platform to share their creations, network and have a goal to work towards
- Give CoCA students a chance to earn income from their creativity
- Put Massey and CoCA on the map for the public, staff and fellow students to see the cool things that our students are creating.
- Promote a sense of unity and common goal for students to work towards.
- There are thousands of CoCA students. For us to ensure that this event has quality products and is successful there may need to be an application/screening process to choose thee stall holders. This will avoid students trying to sell poor quality, quickly put together work to make a quick buck $$$
- Some students may not have the funds to make their products. I thought that we could offer a loan service for people who may not be able to afford printing or materials for their product. If we could work out a way to provide a $30 or so loan to students (or offer to buy materials which they will pay back) who have a barrier to access due to less money then this could be a way around this. We don’t want this event to only be for those who can afford to make lots of product
- Students may be left with stock if it doesn’t all sell on the day. We’d need to make sure that students know of this risk and don’t make too much stock. We’d need to let the participants know how many students we’re expecting and they can create accordingly. If all stock doesn’t sell, we could post remaining stock on MAWSAgram, have a group stall at an underground market or encourage them to find alternative ways of selling their product so they aren’t out of pocket??/
- We’d maybe have to set a maximum price for products being sold. Though we want higher quality things, there is a limit to what most students are able to pay for a gift to themselves/someone else
- Make sure students know that this is not just a chance to make lots of money- products need to be reasonably enough priced for other students to buy but above the cost of materials/production/time
- Need to work out how to involve all CoCA student including music and CMP students- liaise with them to see what they could offer to the event (entertainment, free things, experiences rather than products)
Logistics:
- To be run during the lunchtime hours of one day in semester 2. I think a Wednesday or Thursday would be ideal as Tuesday is pay day. Needs to be early enough in the semester for students to not be overly stressed by hand-ins and have time to do a good job. Perhaps a week or two after the mid-semester break so they have time then to work on their offering
- Each stall is run by at least one person (either the creator or a nominated friend). Stalls can be split between students who want to share space.
- Students will apply to have a stall in advance so that we can guarantee quality, thought through end products. They will be told all details of how many people to expect, and a face book group/community will be created to share information and foster group engagement
- On the day, students will set up with price stickers and their names on their products. Payment will be streamlined to one desk where staff will keep records of what is sold and for what price. After the event, payment will be made to each creator for what they sold (excluding tax or other payments that may need to be taken out if we don’t get a grant including staff, materials etc.).
- BBQ and potentially live music will be at the event to get it buzzing/pull a crowd. If we make a good effort to include all CoCA colleges then there should be support from all staff and students and this will be a positive, community-enriching event.
Marketing:
- Posters all around uni
- Branding: creative, doodle-like, Tallulah to do drawings of stalls/people/creative colourful vibes?
- Event on FB, collaborate with all the colleges and clubs to promote
- MAWSAgram post and stories
- BBQ at event to pull people in
- Word of mouth from participants
- Email key people outside of uni who may be interested to see what we’re getting up to- people within the NZ/Wellington creative arts scene
