No Throw

#nothrow
A project to encourage reusable culture on campus

A brewing success!

No throw has come to an end, and what a success! Tussock has included keep cups in their business as usual creating an incentive and reward to use a keep cup and through this project the team created a need for Tussock to even continue to stock keep cups.

This year alone Tussock has sold 178 keep cups and 2855 discounted coffees (that is not including the complementary coffee that comes with  Tussock's keep cups). Astounding figures and this shows there was a real need for Tussock to join the keep cup movement.

Johanna's initial idea wasn't fully achieve with this finality of the project, but very near! Still a success achieving a very big part of the project. Three main ideas made up the initial project:
  1. The campus cafe has a financial incentive for people use keep cups when getting a coffee. This was suggested in the form of a discount or a stamp.
Tussock gives 20c off each coffee if you use your own cup or keep cup. There is even incentive to by a Tussock keep cup through the complementary coffee with the purchase of a keep cup, which is about the price of two coffees.
  2. Have an honesty system of mugs. Part of the initial idea was to create a place for people to take a mug to Tussock to purchase a coffee.
Even though this idea was never explored Tussock still extends the 20c off a coffee even if you bring your own mug.
  3. Have Massey branded keep cups with an encouraging slogan.
The new keep cups which Tussock stock are Tussock branded, not quite Massey or the encouraging slogan. Johanna did, however, design posters that are up around the campus with slogans about using a keep cup to reduce waste.

Lessons learnt from #nothrow
  • Make sure to keep a balance of power in the group, make sure everyone is contributing equally. With this project it did have the danger of the staff doing more than the students, which in the end lead to the student loosing momentum in the project.
  • After achieving goals, go back and look at the initial idea and ask the project is this achieving the initial need? It is important to acknowledge and keep in mind where the project initially came from.
  • To integrate ideas with current services to create a shift in the campus's student experience.

Tussock selling keep cups!

The Keep Cup team had a huge success with their first trial of bringing keep cups to Massey Wellington's campus. 25 keep cups were donated to the project by Mags Chalecka-Harris, who co-facilitates the project alongside Andrea Marsden. These cups were then stationed in Tussock for the campus cafe to sell for $10 with a complementary coffee. The first cup sold within the first 30seconds, the rest followed within four days. The team was also able to collaborate with Tussock to give customers 20c off each coffee made in a keep cup.

The team is currently ordering more keep cups to continue selling at Tussock. 50 cups will soon be arriving in the post.

Later on in the project, the team will be looking at how they could use students to design the cups for Tussock to sell, distributing student work and celebrating the talent Massey fosters.

    About this project

Disposable cups have become a luxury that comes with our daily cup of coffee. On the Massey University campus Tussock ordered 100,000 takeaway cups last year alone. Staff and students had no alternative! The Keep Cup team at Campus Co-Lab aim to change that. By sourcing keep cups for Tussock to sell and exploring ways to enhance the reusable culture on campus, steps are being taken to reduce the use of disposable cups.
